The day is here, you've listed your home for sale. You've taken all the appropriate measures of cleaning, de-cluttering, hiring a Realtor, painting and anything else that was needed or suggested to get your home sold, in the least amount of time, for the best price. Somewhere, along the line, your Realtor advised that your home should remain clean at all times, counters should remain clutter free, beds should be made, wipe mirrors, faucets and other bathroom and kitchen apparatus of water spots, food particles or toothpaste. The list probably seems long, but since no one can predict when a potential buyer wants to see your home, it's best to make sure things are done every day.
While your sparkling in your house and anticipating showings there are some foods that can, literally, make a potential buyer walk in and turn around and walk out. Smells linger. Some smells are worse than others. While we understand this is still your home, certain smells are a turn off and a potential deal breaker for some buyers. With thoughts like " Is that smell going to linger into carpets and paint ? " It is hard to convince someone of something like " It will eventually dissipate " when they have already convinced themselves that they simply cannot get pass the smell. Also, keep in mind with today's diets, diets of all kinds, from vegetarian to vegan, aside from the smell, couple the smell with the mere fact that a certain food is off limits to a buyer, this could become detrimental to a sale.
What foods should you try to avoid when selling your house ?
- Spicy Foods
- Eggs, especially boiled
- Foods with heavy onion and garlic
- Curry or take out like Chinese and other rather stinky take out that has fish sauces
- Organ meats like liver
- Oh, and please do not burn the popcorn !!
Unfortunately, the above list of foods come with some pretty stinky smells that can linger for days. Now, I know what you're thinking : " I can light a candle, maybe some incense, I have a great tart warmer ". These all are great things, however have you ever smelled Vanilla Bean Salmon or Lavender Eggs ? The point is things like candles have a time and a place, but they do not mask a smell from these foods. In fact, you are simply adding one smell on top of the other to come up with a concoction that probably smells worse than the original.
The best thing that you can do when selling your home to avoid foul smells and keep the kitchen remaining clean are simple crock pot meals. This allows you to still enjoy your home, family dinners and your kitchen all while keeping it clean and smelly free. And, if you just can't live without some of these things, the grill is your friend.
