Dogwood Trees ~ Waking in Lake Arrowhead

Dogwoods are one of my favorite flowering trees. I honestly didn't know much about them, or maybe Dogwood Bractnever noticed one, until I moved to the San Bernardino Mountains in 1991. But here, in Lake Arrowhead and its surrounding towns, you have to notice these beauties this time of year because when they wake from a winter's sleep, their white, bright, neon flowers (bracts) demand attention.  Unfortunately, the flower-like petals only last two to three weeks.

Today, while running errands, I decided to stop and take a few pictures of these spectacular trees. Right now they are at their peak with their sweet, white flowers waving in the slight breeze. Dogwoods, here at least, seem to prefer the cooler, shadier side of our lake, with partial sun.  One of the best roads to enjoy the dogwood tree, is Kuffle Canyon. So, take a little detour and take your time.  Stop and enjoy the beauty.

P.S. I love the Legend of the Dogwood Tree.

Being a flatlander, I do appreciate you posting comments about when the dogwoods are blooming.

It gives us some idea of when to plan our annual trip up to Lake Arrowhead to enjoy springtime in the mountains.

Each year we head up the hill to hike the Indian Hill Trail, the nature trail at the Dogwood Campground and the Heaps Peak Arboretum loop.

The trip wouldn't be complete without a stop at the Belgian Waffle Works for the Mud-Pie Belgian and the Hot Apple Annie!

Thanks again for the update and pictures.

Jimbo;   I love this time of the year.  And it seems like the Dogwood bracts are bigger than normal.   So beautiful.      OH and the Belgian Waffle, LOVE LOVE LOVE!
