Twin Peak's Strawberry Flat, a Bit of History ~ Right Here in The San Bernardino Mountains

Your LAKE ARROWHEAD REALTOR would like to share some local LAKE ARROWHEAD INFORMATION with you.

Did you know that Twin Peaks was once known as Strawberry Flat? Maybe you've never even heard of Twin Peaks.

Strawberry Flat is surrounded by lush pine, evergreen and oak trees, tucked between Crestline and Lake Arrowhead (just off Highway 189) in the sleepy little town of Twin Peaks. Twin Peaks was once known as Strawberry Flat (named for the strawberries that were grown there, so the tale goes). When the towns-people first applied for a post office to be be named Strawberry, in 1916, their request was denied. They were told the name Twin Peaks would be used as the second choice; named for the two peaks that you see from the valley below; Strawberry Peak and Little Strawberry Peak.

A couple early settlers were the Dexters and the Switzers, both families leaving their hand print on our cozy town. The Dexters constructed a resort, ran a saw mill and built many cabins in this community. Bert Switzer was one of the first forest rangers around, and owned the local general store (where Pine Rose Cabins now sits), plus managed rentals. His wife, Sara, ran the Twin Peaks post office.

Some of those original cabins were one roomers, with no indoor bathrooms or kitchens. Folks making their trek up the mountain to "camp" may have had a roof over their heads when they got here, but not many other conveniences. But I doubt they cared, as they were coming to enjoy the great outdoors! I show some of those cabins from time to time, and though they all have "indoor" plumbing, now, I can't help but think what troopers our early pioneers were.

There are approximately 201 parcels within the Strawberry Flat subdivision. Home Owners Association dues are very inexpensive (around $250.00 a year) which includes road maintenance (removing SNOW). At this time there are approx. 35 homes/cabins for sale in the town of Twin Peaks (and Strawberry Flat) ranging in price from $43,000 to $899,500 (figures are from Rim MLS and are deemed reliable but not guaranteed). Call or email for a list.

Within our little town you'll find a fabulous place to dine, The Historical Antlers Inn... a place to stay, The Pine Rose Cabins.... a place to pick up supplies, The Mountain High Market...and so much more.

For a special summer adventure, go visit  Strawberry Peak Fire Lookout!

Check out my post on the Rim of The World Historical Society (and museum) for more information about our Mountain History.
