YOU'RE GIVING ME A HEADACHE!

While reading this post  HOW_DO_YOU_SMELL  this  AM, it came to me that a post on "real" smells was in order. You know: nice or stinky ones. I, for one, LOVE the smell of a "lightweight" candle  Candle  or perfume scent. Nothing yummier than walking into a home that has a "soft" fresh citrus aroma.  BUT, I can't be around any "fake" smell  unless I want a whooper of a headache.  I mean within moments. Now, when I find "natural" scents--and I mean REAL natural--I can handle it.

And it's difficult to tell our clients, and even fellow co-workers, "WHEW, you're giving me a headache! "

  Any ideas????

Hi Kat,

One of the first things that you are taught when you decide to become a commercial actor is to NEVER wear perfume, cologne or heavily scented anything to an audition for just the reason you mentioned.  And agents would do well to remember this advice.

I think that tactful honesty is always the best policy.  Something along the lines of "That fragrence is really nice, gee, I wish I wasn't so sensitive to things like that.  I can't wear them or even be around them without getting a severe headache."  Usually, if you tell someone that something is causing you pain, but reassure them that you are not judging them or their grooming choices they might get the hint.

Just make sure that you are not sending the impression that you are making the statement or judgement based upon anything other than a pure physical response.  Saying "I hate Susie's perfume, it gives me a headache" for instance would be taken quite differently than "Susie always is so well groomed, I just wish I was not allergic to perfume, it gives me a severe headache".

As for coworkers, you actually might just want to lay it on the line for them.  After all, you are not the only person that this happens to and if a client has this problem, they may not say anything, but they won't stay a client for long.

Take care, help lots of people and have a wonderful day!

Try telling them that buyer's agents will assume a heavy scent is covering something worse. It is the first thing I tell buyers when I walk into a home with a choking scent.

The Clean smell is best. I love it when I get a comment like... Wow it smells really clean. That is the ultimate. I too believe that smell equals covering up something.

Tisza:  GREAT advice. Thanks.

Jim:  Very good suggestion.

Donna: DITTO--love the "real" clean smell.  NOTHING beats fresh and clean.

THANKS ALL.
