I think when we stop learning we're DEAD. And, in Real Estate, there are always new things to learn: from technology and new gadgets to contracts and forms. BUT what about all the "designations" we have at our disposal? Do we need them? How important are they? How helpful have they been to your business?
I have MUCH to learn (thankfully, it means I am still kicking)!! Maybe my business card will one day be full of them...
Here are just a few below:
e-PRO® (this is one I want!!): INTERNET TRAINING PROGRAM REALTOR e-PRO® Web site.
ABR, Accredited Buyer Representative focuses on all aspects of buyer representation REBAC Web site.
CRS®, Certified Residential Specialist® You may benefit from nationwide referrals, a professional image that attracts clients, and sales and marketing support CRS Web site.
GRI Graduate REALTOR Institute A BIGGIE. Members take this course in residential real estate who want a solid base of information for their business. new GRI site
THERE are MANY more. http://www.realtor.org/runivers.nsf/pages/designation

Hello Kat, I hope you don't mind the link but I did offer some suggestions about designations:
How To Make Real Estate Designations & Accreditations Work For YOU!
Delete at will!
Thanks for the post.
Chris; THANKS so much. I certainly will NOT delete the link. Very helpful!
Debi; I agree. And KNOWLEDGE is POWER!
Wayne: You're so very welcome! Thanks for commenting. I appreciate it.
Emmett: Yep--so true; use it or lose it. Thanks for adding the comment.
Linda: Knowledge of your area, and knowledge in general, is always a GREAT thing. Thanks for commenting.
Eric: I am impressed: 500 sales. SUPER!
I don't think our clients care about those letters after our names. And many agents have little clue about them either.
But for me there are two designations that mean something: CRS & CCIM.
Why? Because they both require the members to have proven they can sell some property. You can't earn them in a weekend. In fact, you have to submit affidavits of your work and your education.
The classes to earn my CRS took me about 12 months to get through, as I was getting my sales numbers up to qualify. CCIM is a butt kicker course and requires a lot more to qualify, and I am really looking forward to starting on it soon!
I also spoke to a lot of CRS & CCIM designees. From them I learned that you will get Referrals because you have earned your designation, and have become a member. Because it shows you have proven your commitment, to at least that degree, And they are right, My referrals, because I am a CRS, have paid for the classes many times over. And the classes are so good, there are some I will be taking again.
But the comments above are correct-
Do it for the education. Use the courses to advance your career, make you a better agent and help your clients. And sell some real estate too!
Melanie: A co-worker of mine is currently taking the GRI and is very happy about the experience. Thanks for commenting.
David: Maybe the initials are more important to some than others. Thanks for your thoughts
Sarah: After going over all the material on these designations, I may ad the CRS to the E-PRO I want to take. Thanks for your comments.
How many is too many? The answer is simple:
When you need two or more business cards to demonstrate all of your initials earned, then you have too many!
