Whenever David and I take a Sunday drive off the mountain, we try and find a local place to visit; Yesterday was no different. This time we discovered a hidden jewel at UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA RIVERSIDE ; Botanic Gardens!
It actually took us a few wrong-turns to get to our destination, as they are nestled in the Box Spring Mountains on some 40 acres overlooking the campus. We bought our parking pass (self ticket machine) and started our adventure through these gardens.
The first plantings took place way back in 1963. Today, a few of the plants and trees you'll come across as you stroll through the grounds are an Alder Canyon, Herb Garden, Ponds, Rose Garden, Green House... But better than me telling you everything, GO VISIT this awesome spot yourself. It's a perfect family outing.
Hours are 8:00 until 5:00 PM daily, except New Years, Independence Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas.
UNIVERSITY of CALIFORNIA RIVERSIDE, Botanic Gardens is located in Riverside, CA (the link will give you all the info you'll need.

I love botanical gardens. When I was farming I had such a connection with the Earth it was crazy. Botany is a phenomenal science; ask the bees. Lots of bee keepers by you?
Tom: Oh, and I saw lots of bees yesterday. I KNOW how they got the name "busy bee" because they certainly were. :)
Kat, Lee and I do the exact same thing. When we get a day off we love our day trips too. We discovered the Raleigh Botanical Gardens a few years back. I'll need to go dig out my pics of our day there. Nice find!
Kat, great photos and slide show! Very beautiful! It is certainly a treasure to have these botanical gardens.
Lee and Pamela: I'm looking forward to see those!
Tony and Darcy: You're so right!
Kat, I'm glad you got to come to Riverside to visit the botanical gardens here. From your photos, I can say that it is a lot more colorful this time of year than when I when I went in Feb. Have you been to the Huntington Botanical Gardens in Pasadena?
Vicki: The place was really "spring" ready. Nice, nice place for family day out. And NO place can compare to Huntington...ah, lovely!
