On our way to Mesa Verde National Park, from Prescott (pronounced Prez-skit) to Cortez, CO, we viewed some of the most breathtaking landscape anywhere in the west! I wish I would have taken more pictures.
And one of the most interesting place we stopped to visit was, the RIORDAN FAMILY MANSION in Flagstaff AZ.
This spectacular mansion, designed by the creator of the Grand Canyon's El Tovar Hotel, Charles Whittlesey, was built in 1904 for the Riordan brothers, Michael & Timothy. The brothers and their families shared this amazingly large "duplex," each family having a mirrored version of the other and yet totally separate. The arts & craft style mansion is 13,000 sq ft, with 40 rooms.
Timothy & Michael were members of a prominent Arizona family and played a huge role in the development of Flagstaff. They were very invloved in lumber, railroads, cattle, banking and politics.
