FIRE LOOKOUTS in The San Bernardino Mountains

Your Lake Arrowhead Realtor would like to share some local Lake Arrowhead Informationwith you.

There are three well-known FIRE LOOKOUTS in The San Bernardino Mountains: STRAWBERRY PEAK, BUTLER PEAK & KELLER PEAK, and they are opened 9:00 - 5:00 daily beginning Memorial Weekend and continuing until our first snowfall. They are manned by volunteers (THANKFULLY). I've been to Strawberry and Keller Peaks... 'bout time I tackle Butler.

Fire Lookout TowerA fire lookout is a volunteer who looks for fires from the fire lookout towers. The towers are normally in remote areas, on mountain tops and at high elevations, with great views of the surrounding terrain.

* Not for those who may be afraid of heights.

STRAWBERRY PEAK

This FIRE LOOKOUT was built in 1933 and stands at an elevation of 6,153 feet. Its location is in the tiny town of Rim Forest and is our most accessible lookout. From this 30-foot high tower, you can see as far as the San Gabriel Mountains, Bulter Peak, Keller Peak, Saddleback Mountain, and even Catalina on a clear day.

Directions: Highway 18 to Rim Forest, to Bear Springs Road.  Follow the lookout signs. The lookout is 2 miles on this paved road

KELLER PEAK

Named for Ally Carlin Keller (born in 1868), who was at one time an employee of the Forest Service,  The Keller Peak lookout is the oldest rremaining "original" tower. The lookout stands at an elevation of 7,882. The Children's Forest is also located in this area, on the road from the highway 18 to the peak.

Directions :  Highways 18 or 330 to Running Springs, past the village, turn right on Keller Peak Road (1N96). This 5-mile road is paved all the way to the tower. At the fork in the road, turn right & continue to the lookout.

BUTLER PEAK

Located between the little towns of Green Valley Lake & Big bear Lake, this 12 x 12 wooden cabin/tower was built directly on a rock and at an elevation of 8,535. The lookout was constructed in 1936 and was named after George E. Butler, a local politician and Bear Valley property owner. This lookout is on a dirt trail (rough, so a 4x drive vehicle is advised.

Directions:Take Highway 38 to Fawnskin (Big Bear Lake area) to  Forest Road 3N14 to junction Forest Road 2N13. turn left, follow to Forest Road 2N13C. This last road takes you to Butler Peak.

Why Are You on ActiveRain? Why Blog? Who Are Your Followers?

Your Lake Arrowhead Realtor would like to share some local Lake Arrowhead Informationwith you.

Writing a BlogI've been on ActiveRain since 2007 and have come a long way in respect to my posts: what I write, how I write and to whom I write. At first I was going for the points (it was ALL about points). Once I got over that pointless hurdle (it took a long time), the light bulb went off; Write for your audience.

Since the majority of bloggers here on AR are Realtors (lenders, etc), I have to think that most are here to increase their business (make $$$'s). Oh yeah, I know, there's the social friendship thingy, but I still believe you're mainly here for business. I AM!

Newbies will quite often ask "What do I write about?" I always tell them, "Whatever you want?" (local stuff, poetry, jokes, photos, whatever). Then I pull out these questions:

  1. What is your main objective for joining ActiveRain?
  2. What do want to accomplish with your blogging?
  3. What kind of followers do you want to attract?

The third question is very important because the type of content you produce will dictate who you will attract.  I want to increase my business, so I write about local events & share local information & history. It works for me. The consumers/clients who follow me know they're going to learn about Lake Arrowhead and other mountain communities. ...and they get to know me along the way.

CONTENT is KING/QUEEN: Regardless who your target audience is, try and sit back and look at your post objectively.  Is it interesting? Would you come back again? What did you get out of it?

The bottom line is write what you know, to the audience you wish to reach and make it your best every time.

Tips to Help Keep Your Mountain Home Safe Against Fire

Your Lake Arrowhead Realtor would like to share some local Lake Arrowhead Informationwith you.

The word "fire" scares even the bravest people. And especially when it comes when we're talkingabout forest fires.

The Mountain Area Safely Taskforce (MAST) was formed in 2002 because the group was concerned withLog home in the forest the publics' safety in our mountain communities. MAST has helped to reduce the fire threats in our San Bernardino Mountains by removing more than 1,000,000 dead (or dying) trees; either on private or public properties. Below are some very useful tips to help keep your home safe from fire:

  • Maintain 100-ft "defensible clearance around your home or other structures. 30-100 feet should be a reduced fuel zone to property line.
  • Trim branches within 10 feet of your home's chimney
  • Get rid of dead (or dying) trees and other dry vegetation
  • Remove all pine needles and leaves from under your decks and within 10 feet of your home or other structures
  • Trim grass to four-inches in height
  • When planting trees, space them 20 to 30 feet apart
  • Landscape with resistant to fires and with plants that require little watering

For more information on how to keep your property "safe" check out the following links:

Still Posting Content Without Permission - Look Out! The Copyright Troll is on Your Trail

Very good tip for those that break the copyright law/s.

Via Mike Saunders - Athens, Ga & Surrounding Communities (Keller Williams Realty - Greater Athens):

I find it a bit amazing that with the guidelines here on Active Rain and the numerous articles about copyright violation, there are still some who will post content without permission. Well, if you are still doing it, here is something that might make you want to think twice.

According to an article on Wired, we now have "Copyright Trolls" similar to patent trolls. What's a copyright troll? you might ask. Simply stated, it is someone who purchases copyrights to newspaper, magazine and other articles and then trolls the internet for unauthorized use of those articles. And with the power of Google and the other search engines, these trolls have a good chance of catching those that reuse without permission.

One company in Las Vegas has been doing this since March and has claimed to have filed over 80 suits and has settled an undisclosed number for between $1500 and $3000. They also state that they will be filing hundreds more suits this year. And this is only from the unauthorized use of the content of their first client.

They are specifically targetting blogs and websites that are posting unauthorized content. The most recent Copyright Act allows for penalties of up to $150,000 per violation. Now wonder poor bloggers are settling for much less.

Lake Arrowhead's Native Animals, Birds & Plants ~ Thought You'd Like to Know

Your Lake Arrowhead Realtor would like to share some local Lake Arrowhead Informationwith you.

Racoons in Lake ArrowheadQuite often as I am showing property, I'll be asked by potential buyers, "What kind of tree is that?  Or, "What kind of wild animals do you have here?" Both are great questions because we do have some very different animals, birds, trees & plants, than most folks experience "off the mountain."

Some of our native mountain critters include coyotes, bob catsPonderosa Pine, black bear, grey squirrel (though we rarely see these guys anymore), chipmunks, ground squirrels, raccoons, mountain lions, skunks & cougars. I've seen all of these at one time or another, except the cougar.  And you may run across a mule deer and red fox, but not often.

Trees! Oh we have some big, beautiful trees in our local mountains: White fir, ponderosa pine, cedar, white pine, coulter pine, black oak, white oak & always my favorite, dogwoods! As you drive around the lake, you will see that the warmer side will include more oaks (and manzanitas), verses the cooler side and all their pines.

WoodpeckerBirdies in our mountains is, for sure, a bird-watchers dream: Of course the Stellar Jay! Blue Jay, Quail, Ducks, Western Tanager, Northern Tanager, Wood Pecker (just like Woodie), Chickadees, Barn Owls and Bald Eagles & hawks. The nosiest of the bunch is hands down, The Stellar Jays.

...and then there are the insects and other mountain pests. Ah, that's for another post.

Lake Arrowhead Mechanics ~ The Car Dr. My Subaru Goes too

Your Lake Arrowhead Realtor would like to share some local Lake Arrowhead Information with you.

It's a question I get quite often, after the initial "what is your favorite restaurant."  Do you have mechanics up here? Do we? We have plenty. There really is very little we're missing on our mountain... but this post is about Car Doctors.

My family and I moved here in 1991 and I have taken my car/s to the same mechanic ever since. My Subaru gets its check ups, tire care and oil changes at DAVE'S VIKING AUTO CENTER in Rim Forest. Not only is my car always given "special" treatment," but I know I can drop in on Dave's place anytime, any day, if I think something might be "wrong," and he'll have a looksie right there and then.

Dave's Auto Center is located at 26343 Apache Trl Rimforest, CA 92378 ~ (909) 337-8534

There are more automotive businesses on the mountain, this is just the one "I go to."

Excitement Will Energize You

If you love what you do, you will be energized (with excitement).... which will spill over to your clients.

Via Lou Ludwig CRB, CRS, CIPS, GRI, SRES, TRC, e-PRO, (Ludwig & Associates):

Motivational Power Quote

Excitement Will Energize You

"I feel sorry for the person who

can't get genuinely excited about his work,

not only will be never be satisfied,

but he will never achieve anything worthwhile."

Walter Chrysler, Founder of Chrysler Motors

As I see it. . . . . . . .

Excitement will energize you

The person that's excited about their career and lie is a person that's on the right track to succeed.

Excitement energizes us to pursue our career with passion and to go the extra mile in our efforts to achieve our goals.

Excitement becomes contagious. The people around us will catch it and becomes energized. An energized person becomes far more likely to do business with us as a result of our personal excitement and our in our ability in energizing them.

Excitement stimulates us and we maintain a high level of enthusiasm. We become more effective as a result of our excitement and it fuels our success journey.

Pests in Lake Arrowhead & other Mountain Towns ~ Get Rid of Them!

Your Lake Arrowhead Realtor would like to share some local Lake Arrowhead Information with you

We have some interesting "bugs" in our local mountains. And 99% of the time, they're not welcomed. As  a REALTOR,  when I sell a home, more often than not a Pest Report is ordered.

Our most common and most destructive  "pest" in Lake Arrowhead, and other mountain towns, is the Subterranean Termite.  These little buggers love wood, and we in the mountains are all about wood.   Subterranean Termites attack the wooden elements of homes & businesses. You may not always see their handy work right away, because it's hidden behind wall boards, siding or other wood trim.

The experts who rid of our home of these pests, do not tent a home like they may off the mountain. Instead, they spray chemicals around, and into, the home. Below is a list of local "Pest Companies" who can help keep your home "bug free." And yes, they can help keep your home rid of spiders (we have tons of these leggy pests), rodents and OTHERS creepy crawlies.

So, if you're concerned about bugs and want to make sure your home is bug-free, then you may want to contact one of our local experts.

  •  Burkitt's Bugs, Lake Arrowhead, CA ~ (866)431-2079
  • Stotemyre Pest Control Lake Arrowhead, CA 92352 ~ 909-336-2294
