Your Lake Arrowhead Realtor would like to share some local Lake Arrowhead Information with you.

Crestline is a sweet little town in The San Bernardino Mountains, about seven miles west of Lake Arrowhead. It sits at an elevation of approximately 4,700 feet above sea level. And, like Lake Arrowhead,  Crestline always has a ton of fun summer activities happening. For instance, Lake Gregory, which lies in the middle of Crestline, has opened their water slides for all to enjoy. Plus, since this lake is public, you are allowed to fish (you can even rent a boat). Not to mention the gentle walking trail that surrounds the lake.

But this coming weekend is all about Crestline's Jamboree Days. This excitement takes place on July 3, 2010 and the parade starts at 10:00 AM. Pack up the kids and lawn chairs and get there early to get the best spot in town.

After the parade, go enjoy the street festival, check out the great stuff vendors have on display and watch for the entertainment.  This event is for all ages. MARK your calendar.

My name is Missy and I am a bird-watcher. I watch a lotta birds, but the one that drives me absolutely crazy, is the Steller Jay! They swoop down and land on the birdie feeder thingy that the Mr. & Mrs. have anchored to an old tree just outside, and peer over at me. I know what they're thinking... Ha ha ha, you can't catch me. They're right. I'm usually stuck on a window seal behind a pane of glass. DRAT!

I know some folks call 'em Blue Jays, which our little  town of Blue Jay was named after.  But those folks have  been wrong for decades. I know, because I know my species of birds.

Steller Jays are related to the Blue Jay, which are native North-American feathered friends, but the Steller Jays have a black head. That's how I tell them apart. Like most of my feline pals, I love watching birds. But to be perfectly honestly, I'd rather get up close and a tad more personal with 'em.

Steller Jays are LOUD. Oh man, you have no idea how loud they squawk at me sometimes. And they're pretty brave (or maybe a little nuts) because they will just sit there on that birdie feeder thingy and stare at me. STARE, I tell you. Let me share a couple other things you may not know about these rascals:

1. They're named after a fella,  Georg Wilhelm Steller, who discovered them in 1741
2. They're in the same family as the crows, ravens, magpies & nutcrackers.
3. Their diet may include seeds, nuts, berries, other fruit and they've even been known to cobble up eggs, small rodents, and nestlings. I heard some folks say they have eaten snakes and lizards. Yuck!
4. They lay about six eggs and the eggs are oval in shape and kind of glossy. Those eggs hatch in about 17 to 18 days.

Now Blue Jays (real Blue Jays) are, in my esteemed opinion, much more handsome than the Steller Jay. Sssshhhh, don't say I said that because I'll deny it all day long.

So the next time you see one of our Blue Jays in Blue Jay, you'll know they are nothing more than impostors.

You'll have the opportunity to view at least 80 artist exhibitors:  Paintings, mixed medias, wood sculptures, ceramics, jewelry, glass art, and much, much more!

And when your tummy starts growling, there will be plenty of yummy foods to fill it with, from mouth watering Pizza, to the famous Rotary Dogs. Beer and soft drinks will also be available. For the kiddies (and big kiddies) get some Cotton Candy, kettlecorn or popcorn.

Wine lovers, you won't want to miss the opportunity to sample wines from all over California. Oh yes, you can purchase a bottle, OR more. :-) Great prices! ( $50.00 to the VIP "tasting" whcih will include a platter of food).

The first Father's Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910 thanks to the efforts of Sonora Smart Dodd of Washington State. She felt, since we had a special day honoring Mothers, that dads should also be honored as well. Her mother had died during the birth of her sixth child and Sonora's father was left to raise her and her siblings. She was so proud of her father, that she felt the date to celebrate should be on his birthday, June 5th.

Sonora campaigned for years to get "Father's Day" established as an official holiday. At first her idea was laughed at and most folks paid no attention. But slowly, people began to take her seriously and, in 1913, Congress introduced a bill to recognise Father's Day as an official holiday. In 1916 President Woodrow Wilson traveled to Spokane, WA to speak in a Father's Day celebration, wanting to make it offical. But still, Congress resisted the notion, thinking it would be commercialized.

In 1966 President Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honoring Fathers and designated the third Sunday in June as "Father's Day."  In 1972, President Nixon made the date a permanent national holiday.

So we all owe Sonora Smart Dodd a big thank you.

And to all the special guys out there with children and grandchildren, "HAPPY FATHER'S DAY."

 CAMPING, HIKING, FISHING, PICNICING...OH MY!

There are so many things to do and see in, and around, Lake Arrowhead. And if you're the outdoorsy type, then you'll want to stop in at the  San Bernardino Ranger Station/Lake Arrowhead to plan some of your outdoor events: hiking or camping or picnicking.  At the ranger station you can buy your ADVENTURE PASS (you must have one), get maps of trails and campgrounds. Always let the ranger station folks know when you're heading out on a hike.

 You'll also learn how to have a safe, mountain experience. You may WANT to reserve your camping spot SOON. I drove thru "Dogwood Campground this morning on my way to the office and took a few pictures (see video below). Dogwood campground is so peaceful & beautiful and lush with pines, cedars, oaks and, of course, dogwoods.  Call to make your reservations: (909-382-2782).

There are many fun things to do in Lake Arrowhead in the summer season, but I'll keep it short and list my "5 Favorites Things To Do."  Enjoy!

1. Shopping and Eating at Lake Arrowhead Village. You can literally spend hours at The Village: Shop. Eat. Play. Let the kiddies feed the ducks...and so much more.

2. Take a Paddle Boat Ride on "The Queen." Learn all about Lake Arrowhead from the Captain as he guides you around the lake for an hour long trip.

3. Take a Hike!  The MountainTop Hiking Club has a list of hikes they'll be taking, from moderate to extreme. So put on your boots and check out their schedule.

4. Visit The Rim of The World Historical Museum. They are open for the season! Friends and family will really love this spectacular museum and view so many historical items connected with Lake Arrowhead and the San Bernardino Mountains.

5. Head to Wildhaven and visit this wonderful wildlife sanctuary for endangered and indigenous wild animals.

Your Lake Arrowhead Realtor would like to share some local Lake Arrowhead Information with you.

Each year, in late spring, the San Bernardino Mountainside is decorated with the bright yellow Scotch Broom Plant, Except this year, it seems to be thicker and brighter. As I was driving down the mountain yesterday, I took the photo below.

The  Scotch Broom is a perennial shrub that is native to western and central Europe, and loves a very sunny spot. The plant likes dryer, sandy soils at lower altitudes. Scotch Broom usually grows in areas along roadways, making Highway 18 (Rim of The World Highway) a perfect place for this shrub.
