Who doesn't like an old Hollywood "Movie Star" story? That's what I thought.

I don't  enjoy having" garage/yard sales...I like going to them, but not having them. And this weekend David decided he was having one. Of course he roped me into helping him set up. Well, set up turned into several hours of selling "junk."

One woman asked me about my "Shirley Temple" porcelain doll. She bought it, then proceeded me to tell me a great story....

My best friend is a good friend of Priscilla Presley, and one day the two of them called a Realtor and asked to be shown a lakefront estate  in a gated area called Shelter Cove. (The home had once belonged to a well-known mogul, but the woman couldn't recall whom: Maybe Van Nuys, Nabisco or Hilton).  The Realtor didn't have time to show them around, but opened the estate for them. The women promised to lock it up once they were done. While snooping around, opening drawers and cupboards (as women do), they came across a treasure trove of OLD Hollywood "Movie Star" pictures. They were elated!

Dumping the photos on the living room floor, the ladies began separting them into years: 30's, 40's, 50's. "Oh this is Shirley Temple" Priscilla said, holding up a picture of Shirley Temple as a child..  "Oh no, I don't think so." The friend shook her head.

A voice from behind spoke up, "It is Shirley Temple."  They turned and found Shirley Temple (Black) standing behind them! Evidently Shirley was up in the area and saw that someone was in the home and she wanted to come see the place where she had spent so much time as a little girl. Her family had owned Lake Arrowhead property, and of course she had been in Lake Arrowhead during the filming of some of the movies she starred in.

The three women ordered food to be delivered and ended up staying til midnight, sorting through and enjoying those old Hollywood "Movie Star" pictures... and stories.

P.S. Shirley Temple (Black) did not recognize Priscilla Presley until they came to the 50's pictures and Shirley said, "Oh, these were the years of "Elvis the Pelvis..." at which time she looked over at Priscilla and said, "Oh, now I know who you are..."

You'll also find those handy "Poo-Bag" dispenser boxes throughout the Village, making it easy for you to pick up after Fido. 

I recently wrote a post, The Wishing Well, and mentioned how pet-friendly Mary's gift store is. So, next time you want to come to the Village, bring Man's (and Woman's) Best Friend.

Many of the shops in The Village also carry "duck food," that you can buy so you can help keep our feather friends plump. :-)

Sharon McCormick's blue eyes light up when you ask her how THE STUDIO BOUTIQUE came to be. She explains that before the store, came the Lake Arrowhead School of Dance, which she opened in 1981. In the beginning,  Sharon would sell select dance (clothing) items from a closet out of her studio. As the classes grew, so did the need for more inventory: leotards, tights, shoes and other dance wear, thus came...

The Studio Boutiquehas been at its current location since 2004. Inside this very special store is a little girls (and big girls) dreamland. Fancy, frilly and fun. Beautiful soft pastel colors everywhere you turn: on the walls, in all the decor and, of course, the clothing. I've never felt so girly in my life. And it's not all about dancing wear. There are specialty items for all occasions. If you need a birthday or other holiday gift, this is where you'll want to head.

Some of the brands that Sharon carries in her boutique are BottomsUp (wine glasses), Vera Bradley Bags (spectacular), Dreamsacks (a line of clothing made of bamboo and oh, so soft).  One of the most darling areas I discovered here was Sharon's "Tea Room." Inside this tiny room is a place for a Princess! You can find sweet gifts made by Mudpie, EEBoo (fun home-schoolers products) and more.

When you visit The Studio Boutique, plan to stay a while, because if you don't, you'll surely miss something special!

If you have children interested in "dance" then talk to Sharon about her Lake Arrowhead School of Dance. Her school offers classes in classical ballet,  jazz & tap. I've been a member of ACTIVERAIN for well over 3 years. I've LEARNED 75% + of what I know about blogging from ACTIVERAIN. I've "invested" plenty of time learning, and if you WANT to learn, you've got to do just that. LEARNING doesn't just happen. YOU make it HAPPEN. And it DOES take plenty of time.

 Below are some tips on WHERE & HOW to start Blogging

1. JOIN ACTIVERAIN. ActiveRain is FREE for "Member's Only" posts. To MAXIMISE your business/exposure, you really want to be a RAINMAKER. RAINMAKER accounts do cost ($29.00 a mo), but they also get your posts out to EVERYONE/Consumers. That is the idea, isn't it?.

2. Read ACTIVERAIN  GUIDELINES, as this can keep you out of trouble.  Pay close attention to PLAGIARISM, aka STEALING (this is the biggest problem with blogging). Go check out the  ACTIVERAIN MANUAL. But don't just go there, go THROUGH the manual. It's a  MOUNTAIN of INFORMATION

3. REGISTER for Training Classes (online!).

4.START  BLOGGING! Write a post. DO IT! Your first post could be an introduction: About you, the company you work for and your expertise. From there on out, write about your area, local events, whatever you think the consumers looking to buy in your area WANT to READ.

5. Last but not least; BE YOURSELF. Let the consumers see YOUR personality. Write how you speak.

There are many reasons why a home doesn't sell in a reasonable amount of time. The  MAIN reason is PRICE. Your home is most likely OVERPRICED. Now I understand this isn't what you want to hear. I realize you NEED to get X amount of money out of your home. I KNOW you feel your home is MUCH nicer than your neighbors, and maybe it is. But it really ONLY matters what buyers think.  Your home is only WORTH what a buyer is WILLING to pay for it. 

HELP get your home SOLD in a timely manner by using these tips:

1. If you do NOT have a Realtor, interview several. Listen carefully to each, but do NOT assume that the Realtor who gives you the HIGHEST listing price, is the Realtor for you. If his/her List Price is way over the other Realtors, ASK yourself WHY?

2. If you have a Realtor, ask them to do a Market Analysis of your home. He/she will search for the most (3-4 months) recent comparables in your area from the MULTIPLE LISTING SERVICE they use. SOLD comparables are really the most important. Look at the days on market and the List Price verses Sold Price.

3. Prepare your HOME. Put on your "buyer shoes."  Spruce it up: Paint if needed. Clean or replace carpeting. Fix those "broken" things you've let slide.  You want buyers coming in and being "wow'd."  A good first impression makes an impact in many ways. It's not just the way your house looks to potential buyers, but how it feels and smells to them as well. It's about how they imagine it would be to live there.

4. When a Realtor wants to "show your home," LEAVE. Or, at least make yourself scarce.  You want the perspective buyers to be able to explore the house without the feeling of being watched. Buyers are more likely to spend much more time there if YOU are gone. The more time they spend there, the better. They may be seriouslly considering purchasing your home.

5. The offer comes in. Your REALTOR brings you an offer, but it isn't what you hoped for. DON'T reject it right off the bat. Take a deep breath, or sleep on it if need be. Then discuss countering the offer. More often than not, the parties can come together.

Quite often I share personal tidbits about my life. WHY? Because I'm hoping, by sharing, to help bring certain topics to "light." Though a very dark & ugly subject, I feel alcoholism is in our face on a daily basis. I grew up in a family with several alcoholics: An uncle burned to death in a car. A grandfather died in a gutter, drunk. Another relative died of cirrhosis of the liver. 

ALCOHOLICS comes in all shapes, sizes, ages, colors and nationalities. The disease does not discriminate.

Below are factors that may lead to excessive drinking that contribute to the addiction process:

• Genetics. Certain genetic factors may cause a person to be vulnerable to alcoholism/addictions.
• Emotional state. High levels of stress, anxiety or emotional pain may lead some people to drink alcohol to block out the turmoil. Certain stress hormones may be associated with alcoholism.
• Psychological factors. Low self-esteem or depression may make you more likely to abuse alcohol. Having friends or a close partner who drinks regularly - but who may not abuse alcohol - could promote excessive drinking on your part. It may be difficult for you to distance yourself from these "enablers" or at least from their drinking habits.
• Social and cultural factors. The glamorous way that drinking alcohol is portrayed in advertising and in the media may send the message that it's OK to drink excessively.

Fortunately, I don't know what it's like to be an alcoholic. But I do know what its like to have loved ones who are. If you have a loved one suffering with this disease, or any addiction, there are places in the Lake Arrowhead area where they can go. Or, you can go to try and better understand how to live with a loved one who suffers with alcoholism.

Mary Kelley, owner of The Wishing Well since February 2002, is the heart and soul behind this wonderful shop. When asked what her favorite part of owning the store is, she was quick to answer, "Meeting people."  And, having her regular clientele come back again and again. "I have several buyers that actually drive up to Lake Arrowhead for certain things they can't find anywhere else." she added.

Besides the household items of furniture, linens, lamps and blankets that Mary carries in her store, you will be amazed at her spectacular line of collectibles: Wee Forest Folk, Harmony Kingdom, Jim Shore, Willow Tree and on and on. The most commonly sold items in the store are the candles, with Woodwick Candles being a top favorite among buyers. And Mary does free gift wrapping for those requesting it (usually the guys). :-)

For all you pooch lovers, you will not find a more Pet-Friendly store at the Village than The Wishing Well (except maybe  The Three Dog Bakery). As I was snapping pictures, a customer opened the door & peeked in, then hesitated. "Please! Come in and bring your dog!" Mary waved the man inside.  You will see from my photos, that Mary Kelley meant what she said.

The next time you're in Lake Arrowhead, at the Village, make sure you visit The Wishing Well.
