LAKE ARROWHEAD RESORT : This spectacular report is for peace and quiet and pure relaxation. Several years ago, it had a $20 million facelift. Now they have 162 guest rooms and 11 luxurious suites. SADDLEBACK INN: A charming historic inn, built in 1919, after two ambitious middle-aged sisters moved from the mid-west to Lake Arrowhead to build their dream castle. It became the Raven, a twenty-eight room three story English Tavern, host to many of Southland's wealthy for thirty-four years. THE PONY EXPRESS and Realtors have Plenty in COMMON ... Delivering Mail... Delivering Clients

The PONY EXPRESS had a motto; the mail MUST GET THROUGH regardless of wind, sleet, rain, rough roads, etc. Realtors (most of us), I feel, have a lot in common with the PONY EXPRESS; we MUST get the clients through to preview property.

This past weekend, I had a client come up to Lake Arrowhead after flying in from Georgia the day before. She came to preview some property and would be flying back home the next day. Her time frame was limited. She had a wish list of homes-to-see in hand, was excited, determined and ready for an adventure.  As was I!

But with all the snow we've had here in the San Bernardino Mountains, lately, I was a tad nervous about getting her into some of these places, knowing that most were vacant (my post on un-accessible listings) hence; SNOW and ice and difficult access.  I let her know my thoughts, kept her updated on the weather and road conditions, before finally emailing,  "We MAY have to climb over berms and trapse through snow and ice."

Well, that wasn't about to de-rail my client's plans. She quickly replied, "If the roads are safe, I don't mind climbing snow berms if you don't. And, I'll be bringing a few people, so we'll have help if we have to shovel."

Need-less-to-say, the day came, we (four of us and a small pooch) left on our previewing journey with our shovel, extra boots and socks and a picnic lunch in the back of my Subaru. We HAD a blast! Not only did we get into eight of 10 homes on my client's wish-list, when we were done, there were no broken fingernails or bones, and only some very wet britches from sliding off the berms.

Like I said above, the Pony Express and Realtors have plenty in common. They delivered the mail. And We deliver our clients.

At least I try too! :)

FRIDAY FUN, FACTS & STATS ~ Lake Arrowhead, CA ~ Feb. 20, 2009

FUN: What can I say, with this beautiful weather and fantasic snow, the sun shining, I say; Ski is the key.    

FACT: In 1920,  The Arrowhead Lake Company bought Little Bear Lake and surrounding approximately 4,800 acres and changed the name to Lake Arrowhead (after the Arrowhead formation on side of the mt). The Lake Company's plan was to develop the mile high man-made lake into a fine recreational and residential area. Between 1921 and 1923, the dam was completed, a road was constructed partially around the north shore of the lake and the Norman-styled village was built. Includued were a dance pavilion, an outdoor movie theatre, restaurant, beach and bath houses. Three hotels were built -- Arlington Lodge, Village Inn, and North Shore Tavern. A 9-hole golf course was developed on the site of the present golf course.

Jim's (the art to the left is Jim's) works mainly in watercolors and oils on canvas, focusing on local scenery in a plein-air style or simple still lifes. He has received a Bachelor of fine arts at Kansas University and studied with the Italian Renaissance art historian, Ed Eglinski.

Joe Devinny's (his artwork is to the right) paintings are done mainly in acrylics, on canvas, canvas board or panel. He also does stained glass. Joe's concern for the environment has played a large part in his choices. His has been inspired by Aborigine artwork while on his long stay in Australia, and by the wildlife he encountered on his visits to New Zealand, the Galapagos and the Amazon.

THE ROAD TO LAKE ARROWHEAD ~ Many thanks to The MORMONS of The 1850's

When driving up Highway 18, into the San Bernardino Mountains, do you ever think about how this road was constructed? The fact is, it was NO EASY task for our ancestors who "paved" the way for us. Bless them!!! And no, they didn't design and build it so they could cruise on up to Lake Arrowhead, or our surrounding towns, to enjoy the beauty here, frolic in the snow, rent a cabin for a weekend get-a-way or to ski. They built this road out of necessity.

Some 400 or 500 Mormons made their way over the CAJON PASS  in 1851, down into the San Bernardino Valley and began forming a settlement. There was a desperate need for lumber in order to build homes and businesses, and the only place to find all the lumber needed would be up in the mountains. It was then decided that a road up Waterman Canyon, to the mountains, would have to take place. This would be the "first"public road into Lake Arrowhead." Or, rather, what Lake Arrowhead is today.  Though it was dangerous and steep, the seriousness of the logging industry began in July 1852 and the settlers forged ahead with the construction of The Mormon Trail Road (now Highway 18). SAN BERNARDINO HISTORY, per Wikipedia

 Beginning in 1892, a toll road (the Bear Valley Rd Company Toll Road) was completed. The story goes that folks weren't exactly pleased with the fact they now had to pay for what was free. Soon the toll booths (left photo) would mysterously be destroyed...until 1905 when the County of San Bernardino started buying up the toll and lumber roads in order to create a free county public highway.

As I was driving home one day, I stopped at the Mormon Trail Road Landmark, on Highway 18 and took a few pictures of the current monument. This happened the same day I took snapshots of the ARROWHEAD-LANDMARK and I also wrote a post (click on link).

 Of course there were no pictures of the early roads, but I do have a couple of snapshot of the "dedication" (upper right) which took place on November 10, 1932, and one of the Upper Toll Road (upper left photo), THANKS to RUSS KELLER. Russ is a member of the RIM OF THE WORLD HISTORICAL SOCIETY and is a walking encyclopedia of San Bernardino Mountain history. If he doesn't know it, he'll find out. UCLA CONFERENCE CENTER ~ Lake Arrowhead ~ Will be OPEN to the PUBLIC Feb. 23, 2009. COME UP FOR AIR & Fine Dining!

If you've never seen UCLA CONFERENCE CENTER,  here in Lake Arrowhead, much less dined there, you've missed out on viewing one of the most gorgeous spots here in our mountains.  Even before my youngest son (he's a chef) began working there, I was always in awe of this establishment. Whenever I'd have company, UCLA Conference Center was one place I'd take them to see.

 

February 23, 2009, the Conference Center will open their doors to the public for dinner. The price for this meal is $25.00 (adults) and $15.00 (children 12 & under), will include a four-course meal, served in the main lodge (spectacular!). After dinner, our own local historian, Lee Cozad, will present a show on the history of Lake Arrowhead.

SAYINGS FROM THE 1500'S -- FACT OR FICTION? Regardless, they're funny.

 A client (thanks, Kerene) sent this to me...if you've never read it, check it out.

SUBJECT: 1500'S & Something to learn.

  • The next time you are washing your hands and complain because the
    water temperature isn't just how you like it, think about how things
    used to be. Here are some facts about the 1500's
  • Most people got married in June because they took their yearly bath
    in May, and still smelled pretty good by June. However, they were
    starting to smell, so brides carried a bouquet of flowers to hide
    the body odor. Hence the custom today of carrying a bouquet when
    getting married.
  • Baths consisted of a big tub filled with hot water. The man of the
    house had the privilege of the nice clean water, then all the other
    sons and men, then the women and finally the children. Last of all
    the babies. By then the water was so dirty you could actually lose
    someone in it. Hence the saying, Don't throw the baby out with the
    Bath water
  • Houses had thatched roofs-thick straw-piled high, with no wood
    underneath. It was the only place for animals to get warm, so all
    the cats and other small animals (mice, bugs) lived in the roof.
    When it rained it became slippery and sometimes the animals would
    slip and fall off the roof. Hence the saying . It's raining cats and
    dogs
  • There was nothing to stop things from falling into the house.. This
    posed a real problem in the bedroom where bugs and other droppings
    could mess up your nice clean bed. Hence, a bed with big posts and a
    sheet hung over the top afforded some protection. That's how canopy
    beds came into existence
  • The floor was dirt. Only the wealthy had something other than dirt.
    Hence the saying, Dirt poor. The wealthy had slate floors that would
    get slippery in the winter when wet, so they spread thresh (straw)
    on floor to help keep their footing. As the winter wore on, they
    added more thresh until, when you opened the door, it would all
    start slipping outside. A piece of wood was placed in the entrance
    way. Hence the saying a thresh hold.
  • In those old days, they cooked in the kitchen with a big kettle that
    always hung over the fire. Every day they lit the fire and added
    things to the pot. They ate mostly vegetables and did not get much
    meat. They would eat the stew for dinner, leaving leftovers in the
    pot to get cold overnight and then start over the next day.
  • Sometimes stew had food in it that had been there for quite a
    while. Hence the rhyme, Peas porridge hot, peas porridge cold, peas
    porridge in the pot nine days old.
  • Sometimes they could obtain pork, which made them feel quite
    special. When visitors came over, they would hang up their bacon to
    show off. It was a sign of wealth that a man could, bring home the
    bacon. They would cut off a little to share with guests and would
    all sit around and chew the fat.
  • Those with money had plates made of pewter. Food with high acid
    content caused some of the lead to leach onto the food, causing lead
    poisoning death. This happened most often with tomatoes, so for the
    next 400 years or so, tomatoes were considered poisonous.
  • Bread was divided according to status. Workers got the burnt bottom
    of the loaf, the family got the middle, and guests got the top, or
    the upper crust.
  • Lead cups were used to drink ale or whiskey. The combination would
    sometimes knock the imbibers out for a couple of days. Someone
    walking along the road would take them for dead and prepare them for
    burial. They were laid out on the kitchen table for a couple of days
    and the family would gather around and eat and drink and wait and
    see if they would wake up. Hence the custom of holding a wake.
  • England is old and small and the local folks started running out of
    places to bury people. So they would dig up coffins and would take
    the bones to a bone-house, and reuse the grave. When reopening these
    coffins, 1 out of 25 coffins were found to have scratch marks on the
    inside and they realized they had been burying people alive. So
    they would tie a string on the wrist of the corpse, lead it through
    the coffin and up through the ground and tie it to a bell. Someone
    would have to sit out in the graveyard all night (the graveyard
    shift.) to listen for the bell; thus, someone could be, saved by the
    bell or was considered a ...dead ringer.

WINDERMERE; YAHOO IS NOW ON~BOARD! So I say Whoo-hoo for YAHOO!

Yesterday, WINDERMERE REAL ESTATE began feeding all their/our listings, automatically, to YAHOO REAL ESTATE. Hey, I say, the more feeding the better! It will now be joining the current feeds to GOOGLE & TRULIA. And since some 75% plus consumers start their home search online, this will be another way to make their home-search easier.
