 FUN:   The FIRST ice-skating rink in the San Bernardino Mts was built in 1935, in Blue Jay! WINDERMERE FINE PROPERTIES is in the newer building, among other businesses, which was built after the ice rink's roof caved in due to snow (a number of yrs ago) . Today, the public can still have FUN by going to the ICE CASTLE INTERNATIONAL TRAINING CENTER, which is located a short distance from my office.  Check their schedule for public skating.  Stop by our office for a map and directions!

RIM OF THE WORLD REC & PARK DISTRICT-Programs for Young & Old (er)...right here in our local mountains.

 THE RIM OF THE WORLD RECREATION & PARK DISTRICT'S (ROWRPD) mission statement is  "To help enrich and fulfill the lives of the citizens through the provision of facilities and programs that will provide and enhance creative, wholesome and imaginative leisure time living patterns."  It's so true!! 

The first time I became acquainted with ROWRPD was in the mid 90's after reading a little ad in the Mountain News Newspaper,  "How to Get Published." The class would be held weekly for a number of weeks and taught by my mentor, Willma Gore. I had always loved writing and thought I'd give it a shot. 

ROWRPD was established in 1985, transferring control of our local recreation facilities from the County of San Bernardino to an independent local district. Some of these include Arrowbear Park Ball Field, Twin Peaks Ball Field/Rotary Centennial Park, Firehouse Play Area, Mountain Communities Senior/Community Center (pic' to right), ROW Recreation and Park District Office (pic above-this is where my class was held) and MORE.

Another helpful program through ROWRPD is the CHILDCARE ACROSS THE MOUNTAIN program with locations from Crestline to Running Springs. Check their the link for prices.

Here is a sample of what is available:

"SPORTS" PROGRAMS FOR YOUTH include Basketball, Soccer, Football, Wrestling, Track and Field and Softball (for girls).

"RECREATION" PROGRAMS FOR YOUTH include: Acting/Drama, Karate and Gymnastics and MANY more!

"ADULT" PROGRAMS" include: English (as a second language), Tennis, Parenting, to name a FEW.

GET-A-GRIP...with your footing, that is, ON THOSE ICY WALKWAYS! My Winter TIP!

When you're live in a four-seasons' area, you really need to be prepared for ALL of them. We're in the mist of winter, and after a couple of snow storms, I thought I'd share with you AN "ugly" little secretI have that helps me STAY IN A VERTICAL POSITION when I'm walking on icy walkways/driveway, etc (or up until now they have). These not-so-stylish black things in the photos below, are called GET-A-GRIP. I bought them a year ago on QVC and I have been thankful ever since.    I think most hardware stores carry these, or similar ones.  WHAT DO YOU USE TO STAY ON YOUR FEET WHEN DEALING WITH ICE?

(okay they're really ugly, but hey, I'd rather be unfashionable, than be laid up in a cast) They have little cleas thingies on the bottom that grip on ice.

(This is how they look after you pull them over your shoes/boots--very easy to put on and take off)

NO, I DIDN'T CLEAN THEM BEFORE PUTTING THE ON--I was heading out the door. LOL

Not everyone drives a car, has a car or even wants a car. So for the folks who choose that freedom, they can take our local bus, MARTA!

  • MARTA Mountain Area Regionanl Transit System  provides local residents and off-the-mountain and Dial-a-Ride service to Big Bear Valley, Running Springs, Lake Arrowhead, Crestline and San Bernardino.
  • DIAL-A-RIDE  is a local service available to seniors and disabled persons or anyone living more than 1/4 mile beyond MARTA's fixed route. Always CALL at least 2-hours ahead of the time you need to be picked up.
  • PRICING IS approx. .50 a zone.  .25 for seniors or disabled.  CHECK FARES 

Service operates Monday-Sunday year round except on New Years Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving Day & Christmas Day

GROCERY SHOPPING ON OUR LOCAL MOUNTAIN--We have it all!

Usually, while I'm showing new-to-the-area buyers property, they start opening up with questions: schools?, medical facilities, hospitals, etc. And then there's the shopping interest. "Do you have grocery stores up here or do you have to go down the mountain?" 

In fact, we have almost every kind of store you need on our mountain. Maybe we don't have the big warehouse stores, but they're only 20 miles away IF you shop for bulk items. For your normal weekly grocery shopping, we have all we need right here. I do most of my grocery shopping at Lake Arrowhead Village at STATER BROS. Our store has a Deli, meat department and bakery, but no pharmacy, as of yet.

Stater Bros. began way back as a little grocery store on West Yucaipa Boulevard in Yucaipa, California. Twin brothers, Cleo and Leo Stater, purchased the original Stater Bros. Market with a $600 down payment and opened for business on August 17, 1936.

By the late 40's, Cleo and Leo, was joined by their younger brother Lavoy, expanded the chain to 12 locations, with 225 employees.

In the 1950's, Stater Bros. Markets doubled to include 23 locations in the three counties of San Bernardino, Riverside and Los Angeles.   The Bros sold their interest in 1968, and it became a division of Petrolane Incorporated. 

Today, Stater Bros has grown to the largest privately owned Supermarket Chain in SOCAL with  165 Full Service Supermarkets in the six Southern California counties of San Bernardino, Riverside, Orange, Los Angeles, San Diego and Kern.

LOCAL THRIFT STORES not only HELP People in Need--They HELP the ENVIRONMENT

While writing my post RIM FAMILY SERVICES-A Non-Profit Agency, I got to thinking how useful our local Thrift Stores can be. Now some people may snub their noses at the mention of the words "Thrift Store."  But for many fine folks, these stores may mean the difference between buying an affordable pair of shoes for themselves of their loved ones, or NOT being able to buy shoes at all. Not everyone can shop in department stores or on-line for new products. Times are difficult for many people, and for many different reasons. 

The fact is, thrift storeThrift Stores have helped millions of people over the years. Instead of high priced department stores, folks on limited budgets or very low incomes, can shop in these stores and find great bargains on household goods or clothing. Also, one important detail that people forget when it comes to Thrift Stores, is the fact that these shops are like ONE BIG RECYCLING SYSTEM, which in turn helps our environment.   

You know the old saying, One Man's Junk, is Another Man's Treasure....  It's TRUE!
