Building Contractors Home Improvement Expo-this weekend @ LAKE ARROWHEAD VILLAGE-UPDATE!!

JULY 11, 2008: UPDATE: I just found out the winner of the expo: BEST BOOTH & PEOPLES'S CHOICE went to SKYLINE PONDS of Lake Arrowhead (easy to see why IF you had a chance to see their works!) If not, at least check out their site @  SKYLINE PONDS.

Gotta a home project you need to get finished? Started? Well, maybe you can get some help or at least get a few ideas at this weekend's "Building Contractors Home Improvement Expo."

Join the Lake Arrowhead Chamber of Commerce and the Association of Building Contractors for the 13th Annual Home Improvement Expo this Saturday (10:00 to 4:00) and Sunday (10:00 to 3:00). The event takes place at The Lake Arrowhead Village.  

There will be at least 60 exibitors available to answer questions and offer solutions to many home related problems.  WINDERMERE FINE PROPERTIES will have a booth (across from Harry and David's) at this event, also. Please stop by to say hello (I'm there 10-12 both days).

ANNUAL ART & WINE FESTIVAL IN LAKE ARROWHEAD, JUNE 21, 22 2008

Every year, the Lake Arrowhead Rotary puts on the Annual Art & Wine Festival. This year, the 40TH, THE FESTIVAL will be held June 21 & 22, 2008 at Tavern Bay in Lake Arrowhead from 10am to 5pm each day

 Some of the highlights this year are:

  • 80 artists with works ranging from acrylics to oil paintings to woodworking.
  • A Paint Off will be held to those artist who wish to participate. They will complete a work during the festival to be auctioned off on the last day of the festival.
  • Entertainment will include: Rim High School Jazz Band, the N. R. Key String Quartet and Fortissimo Strings.
  • Wine tasting classes
  • Wine tasting contests
  • Mr. Twister will be there to entertain the kiddos
  • Food to include: cheeses, fruit plates, tri-tip and hot pastrami sandwiches, cookies, kettle corn, Italian ice and the Rotary dogs.

Come up for air and the cool, summer breezes as you stroll around the beautiful Tavern Bay Beach Club--across from the UCLA Conference Center.

RENAISSANCE FAIRE & SWASHBUCKLER'S FESTIVAL--June 21, 22, 2008 UPDATE!!

UPDATE!!!!   Because the BLUE JAY CANYON Association filed a complaint with the county, not wanting the faire to be held in The Blue Jay Village, the faire has been moved to BEHIND Jensens--a little street. You'll see signs.

Don't miss the RENAISSANCE FAIRE & SWASHBUCKLER'S FESTIVAL this weekend in Blue Jay Village (Lake Arrowhead). ADMISSION is FREE!  A few of the things you won't want to miss are:

  • SWORDFIGHTING (the kids will love this)
  • LIVE PIRATE MUSIC & SEA SHANTIES (have no idea what that is)

'The TOP 5' Things to DO and SEE in Lake Arrowhead, California

1. ICE CASTLE INTERNATIONAL TRAINING CENTER:   At an elevation of 5,400 feet, in the beautiful San Bernardino Mountains, we have the Ice Castle International Training Center. Michelle Kwan trained right here! I remember when I first moved to Lake Arrowhead in 1991, seeing Michelle and her family at Lake Arrowhead Village--lake side. Michelle was actually practicing her skating moves. In tennies... I had no idea at that moment who she was or what she would become! The training center is now open for public skating (certain times & days)...

But before Lake Arrowhead had the "training" center, there was the Ice Castle; a public ice-skating rink in Blue Jay, California, built back in 1934 (photo from Rim of the World Historical Society). The Ice Castle was an opened-air rink for decades, surrounded by towering pines and cedars.  At some point, however, a roof was added. Then, in 2001, heavy snowfall caused the roof to cave-in. The owner decided not to rebuild.

2.  LAKE ARROWHEAD VILLAGE: There is always something to do or see at Lake Arrowhead Village. You can shop til you drop, walk til you drop and eat til you can't eat anymore. The Village has restaurants galore for all tastes; Mexican, Sushi, Waffles, seafood, smoothies or candyshops. But if you want to find out all about Lake Arrowhead and its history, take a ride on The Arrowhead Queen.  A ride on this tour boat will give you a great lesson about the area, now and then. View homes of past celebrities (not so much today's celebrities, for privacy reasons), plus there are places on the lake that you can only see from a boat. FUN trip!

 3. CAMPING, HIKING, FISHING, PICNICING!..oh my. San Bernardino Ranger Station/Lake Arrowhead is where to begin if you want to "get back to nature." At the ranger station you can buy your ADVENTURE PASS (you must have one), get maps of trails and campgrounds. You'll learn how to have a safe, mountain experience. You may WANT to reserve your camping spot SOON, especially in the summer!! I was driving thru "Dogwood Campground" near Blue Jay few days ago, andI noticed RESERVED tags on ALMOST all sites for this weekend. (call 909-382-2782).

 

4.  RIM OF THE WORLD SCENIC HIGHWAY...  Is an eighty-seven-mile-long, drive that takes you from San Bernardino all through the forested San Bernardino Mountains. You'll wind along Rim of The World's Highways' 18 and 138, and through quaint mountain towns like Big Bear Lake, Running Springs, Sky Forest, Rim Forest, to name a few. You can access Lake Arrowhead  by turning off Highway 18 and onto Highway 173. Rim of The World Highway, a National Scenic Byway, goes from an elevation of 1,000 feet at San Bernardino to over 8,000 feet.  Makes for a great Sunday afternoon drive!

 

 5. TAVERN BAY BEACH CLUB: Beginning in July, every Thursday evening at Lake Arrowhead's Tavern Bay Beach Club, across from UCLA Conference Center, we have the Arrowhead Arts Music Festival.  Concert dates are from July 10, thru August 7, 2008. It's easy to relax, have fun and enjoy Lake Arrowhead's cool evenings under clear, blue skies, as you listen to bands like the Hotel California (tribute to the Eagles) and the Fab Four, a tribute to the Beatles.  For a list of all bands, dates, costs and times see Arrowhead Arts Association.  Check out this TAVERN BAY BEACH CLUB map to for directions.

MOST Positive Experience (Birthday Contest): Becoming a.... (you have to read it to find out)

I was a young VERY Mother; 15 years old. And I think I've been dreaming of becoming a grandmother since my first born came along in 1967. I always loved babies. Loved their soft skin. Loved their smell (most of the time). Loved how they needed me! Then, finally, 10 months ago, it happened. I get "the" call.  

"Hello, Grandma," my middle son, Craig, said into the phone. I could hear his typical smile, even through the telephone line. I told him, in my sleepy voice, that he must have dialed the wrong number (thinking he had meant to dial my Mom, the REAL Grandma). He whispered, "No...we meant to call you." So he, they, were not kidding! I was going to become a GRANDMA! Woo-Hoo!!!

My son and daughter-in-law were only a few weeks pregnant when they called me that early Saturday morning, and it was like a "watched pot" as I waited and waited for time to tick by. Since the parents-to-be are long distance, I relied on emailed-pictures of mommy-to-be and monthly doctor appointment news. During my daughter-in-law, Mei's, January visit, WE found out our angel was a little boy. His name would be Kaden. I liked that... especially since my name begins with a "K.

I, along with my sister, mother and my other daughter-in-law, gave the parents-to-be a baby shower. Not just any baby shower, though. It was a couples shower. OMG, it turned out wonderfully. Friends of my son's whom I hadn't seen in decades came along with their wives and families and fun was had by all. I must say, we could have opened a baby store when Mommy and Daddy were finished unwrapping gifts.

The months did pass, finally, and we all began counting down days. Now we're talking! Then on a quiet evening in latter May, my daughter-in-law was feeling some "odd" pains. (I knew what was coming). The following morning she and my son met with her doctor and they were told that ALL was not well. In fact, things we're not right at all. Her amniotic fluid was half what it should be, which could cause many complications for baby Kaden and Mommy. The doctor scheduled Mei to have labor induced, later that day.  After the inducing medication was prescribed, Mei quickly began dilating. But by 11:00 PM that evening, baby Kaden was stressed and the doctors had to back off the medication. Hours slowly dragged by...then at 8:30 the following morning doctors find that Kaden is not exactly where he should be in the birth cancal and that the cord was wrapped around his tiny neck. A C-section would take place in moments.

...moments later, Kaden arrived; purple and not breathing. He was swooped up by nurses and an oxygen mask covered his little, sweet face. Tubes were quickly jammed down his throat and inserted into his itty-bitty limbs. His prognosis looked grim. THIS COULD NOT BE HAPPENING, was my thought. No, it couldn't!

The next few days were unsettling for every relative and friend who knows the parents and parent's family. Phone calls were constant. Instant messages zipped back and forth via cell phones. We waited for any news. Good news, that is. 

On day four, Kaden began to show enthusiasm for life. He was eating, looked alert and almost all tubes were removed. At that moment, I KNEW ...he was a fighter like his Grandma (ME). Of course, he is! A few days later doctors let him and mommy pack up and head home. Ah.... "Home Sweet Home."

Today is his birthday. He is two weeks old and cute as a bug's ear. Today, as on all the days the past few weeks, I've given thanks to the Man upstairs for taking such good care of Kaden. I also give thanks to Kaden's wonderful doctors and care-givers at the hospital. Life is good. 

The little things I complain about once in a while, are nothing. Mean nothing. Are not important. Life is important. A life. Our lives. Baby Kaden's life, which he now has ahead of him.

FOREST FESTIVAL -- Saturday June 14th 2008 -- Blue Jay, California

 The Forest Festival will take place on Saturday, June 14th (also FLAG DAY) in the Blue Jay Village . Our WINDERMERE Fine Properties office is located here.

 This event is for the entire FAMILY. Children will enjoy seeing the animals from Wildhaven Ranch & Moon Ridge Zoo. There will be TREE Giv-a-ways from WINDERMERE Fine Properties and ALA (Arrowhead Lake Association) * Celtic Music * The Mountain Top Hiking Club will be here...just to name a few fun things.   Come celebrate our forest and all it has to offer! 

The event will be held from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. and sponsored by the U.S. Forest Service and the San Bernardino Mountains Group of the Sierra Club with support of Blue Jay Management.  For more information, visit this link.

FINALLY..I MET an honest-to-goodness AR FRIEND--in PERSON!!

This weekend was great in so many ways: The super company I work for, WINDERMERE Fine Properties/Lake Arrowhead, sponsored the ANTIQUE & CLASSIC WOODEN BOAT SHOW which was a giant success. AND, loads of fun. WINDERMERE Fine Properties had a booth lake side (right next to "The Queen") and we stayed busy from Saturday morning (8-ish), until we closed up shop each day! We got to meet new faces, view the awesome wooden boats and woodie cars, some took boat rides and we helped  "new" clients with Real Estate needs.  Plus, we got to watch June Lockhart (Lassie t.v. series years ago) present awards to the woodie car winners (see photo below).

 HOWEVER, one of the most exciting times for me was when an AR-Friend, MICHELLE PIMENTEL, stopped by the WINDERMERE booth to say hello! She and I talk (blog) on AR quite often, but have never had a chance to meet. I can honestly say, Michelle is exactly like she is on AR; down-to-earth, gracious and a joy to talk too. THANK YOU so much Michelle for stopping by! I hope we meet again, soon, so we can "do lunch."

Michelle is a Home STAGER and I'm thrilled to now have a professional's name to pass on to clients. WE need her service up here (many of our old cabins & mansions are out of date) desperately. Michelle actually has a cabin here, so she knows what I am talking about.

....anyway, I just had to share this news and say "It is a small world" even though AR has grown to such a big world.
