Lake Arrowhead's Bracken Fern Manor & Connection to Mobster, Bugsy Siegal

Lake Arrowhead has always had ties with the Hollywood bunch. MANY celebrities now, as well as then, have called Lake Arrowhead home....an escape from the hustle-bustle of Los Angeles and other large cities below.  But the most famous celebrity ever to own property in Lake Arrowhead was the notorious mobster, Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegal." 

Bugsy (he lothed being called Bugsy) talked the Chicago Mob into backing his new venture, which is now known as Bracken Fern Manor. This Alpine-style inn opened as Club Arrowhead in The Pines on July 4th,  1929. The inn had state of the art  amenities, such as electricity! More importantly, it catered to the rich and famous, offering gambling, illegal liquor and "working girls." Other amenities included an Olympic size swimming pool, skiing, tennis courts, a bathhouse, and more.   The brothel continued operations through World War II. Gambling was maintained in the speakeasy (across the street) up until 1955.  Today, Bracken Fern Manor is a Certified Historic Landmark in the State of California.  (The door to the right led to underground tunnels).

Across from Bracken Fern Manor is where gambling took place at The CLUB. We now call this (below/left)  "The Tutor House." Story has it that when cops were on their way up the mountain from San Bernardino, and administrators were alerted, gambling tables were actually turned over, then appearing as regular tables.

Bracken Fern Manor claims to be haunted by a former "working girl" named Violet.  She killed herself after the mob killed her lover. You can still smell her violet scented perfume wafting through the halls.  Another ghost of a little boy has also been seen at this historic inn.  He is thought to be the son of a former prostitute and was trampled by a team of horses.  Today his tiny footsteps are often seen in the snow...so it is told. 

After the inn became successful, Bugsy convinced the Bosses in Chicago to front him the dough for another little gambling adventure.....Las Vegas.  However, Bugsy's lavish taste caused him to go way over his one million dollar budget and ultimently cost him his credibility with Chicago. And his life. While he was having dinner one evening with his lover, Virginia Hill, at her Hollywood home, Bugsy was shot dead.

Bracken Fern Manor is located at 815 Arrowhead Villas Road, Arrowhead Villas, a tiny sub-area in Lake Arrowhead and is currently a B & B.

I feel like Ricky Nelson....WENT TO THE GARDEN PARTY

I now know exactly what Ricky Nelson meant when he sang his famous tune, "Went to the Garden Party....they all knew my name...no-one recognized me...I didn't look the same."  See, I left my current area seven years ago and just moved back a couple of months ago. When I started going on tour,  again, I thought it was funny when people (Realtors I had worked with for yrs) walked right by me--After looking me right in my face. They do NOT know who I am.

Now, after quite a few weeks of touring under my belt, it's no longer funny. Man! Do I look that bad? I know I've put on a few lbs (well, quite a few), and my mug has some new wrinkles. But hey, those faces peering at me as they stroll by wondering, WHO is THAT? look "different, too." I suppose, to be fair, if you see the same folks week after week, you don't notice the changes like you do after a seven year absence.

So far, I've ONLY spoke up ONCE--to a really good friend. I tapped her on the shoulder and when she turned, I KNEW she had no idea who I was. So, quickly, as not to embarrass us both, I told her. She was sweet and said I looked great, etc...  She IS sweet! Other than her, I just keep my mouth shut and let them ALL keep guessing  who their new competition is.  Maybe I'll keep my trap shut until I lose some weight (of course, that may never happen).

Or, maybe I won't say anything, ever.

P.S.  Did I tell you my last name has changed...along with my body and face? It has. So WHEN they check out the business card I  leave at a home on tour, it is of NO help. 

Okay--maybe this is funny.

Lake Arrowhead on a PERFECT Spring Day!

It is such a beautiful day today, I HAD to get out of the office for a while. So, I drove down to "The Village" in Lake Arrowhead and walked around. I had to do a "little" shopping anyway. What do they call that; Multi-tasking? Yes, that's what I was doing. The Village has two levels and I was on the lower level. The parking lot was packed...I TOOK this as a good sign that all isn't so bad in California--not at Lake Arrowhead's Village, today. PEOPLE are out spending and enjoying life. At least on this "perfect" day. Life is good.... even the duck thinks so.

Strawberry Peak Fire Lookout, in the San Bernardino Mountains

When my family and I first moved to Lake Arrowhead, we'd go out on Sundays and explore our town and the surrounding areas. One of the first places we ventured to was the Strawberry Peak Fire Lookout Tower, in Twin Peaks (near Lake Arrowhead).    This Fire Lookout was constructed in the early '30's and was manned by volunteers to spot fires during the high fire season. 

TODAY, volunteers still use the fire lookouts to spot fires AND, also, to educate the public about the history of the lookouts and our forest.  Visitors are allowed to climb up to the tower and experience the awesome mountain views. The views, in fact, go on forever!

This is not a place for someone who has a problem with heights!

Hours: 9:00 am and 5:00 pm from Memorial Day to Labor Day . Directions : From San Bernardino,  take Highway 18 to Rim Forest, turn onto Bear Springs Rd (only one way to turn), to Twin Peaks. Follow the signs. The fire lookout is  approx. two miles from the sign.  

Wearing comfy clothes and shoes and carry water. Have FUN.

BUT the real way we can tell HOW "our" economy is doing is to look in our own back Yard ...  TAKE A DRIVE! I had to go to my mother's yesterday, some 75 miles from my place and I drove through many BIG cities/counties.  I was able to view MANY malls and PARKING LOTS from the highway. I CAN honestly say, they (parking spots) were FULL! Okay, so maybe everyone was out doing the "walking the mall" for exercise thing....

But then, I picked up my Mom and we drove to one of her local (BIG) discount stores and also to CostCO.  BOTH, I tell you, BOTH, were loaded with cars. And the folks strolling out of the stores had shopping carts buldging over the sides with goodies. I glanced at my Mom and said, "Is this the bad economy the media is always screaming about?"

I THINK not. The economy is what it is, and people are more conservative right now than they may have been before. But, I don't think the economy is heading south at a fast pace as I heard this AM on the news. 

Foreclosures are still a problem, but we knew that was coming with all the naughty loans people were getting. The market --several years ago--was a runaway train and it had to be stopped. So it was.  Now, we just have to be patient and wait until  people get their nerve up and put on their thinking caps and jump back into the Real Estate game....BECAUSE this is a GREAT TIME to BUY!!!

and that is my dimes worth this Monday MORNING!

FINALLY---Some Good Real Estate NEWS for the Housing Market

CALIFORNIA ASSOCIATION OF REALTOR'S (CAR) "Market Matters News" has come out with some "good" news: BEST Time to Buy in Four Years.   The main focus of the article is the difference in a home's actual price and what it SHOULD cost--are the LOWEST in four years. Another words; Homes in some states are MORE afforable.  The states this article has listed include: California, Michigan and Florida with the best gains for affordability.

Now I don't know about you, but any good news is GOOD news. The media has been clobbering our industry for quite a while now and I'm READY to hear some positive verses their constant negative.     Read all about it below:

BLOGGING isn't all about POINTS--or is IT?

I'm sure this topic has been posted "to death," but I am tossing it out there again for the folks who are newbies:  WHY DO YOU BLOG? (I am speaking about Active Rain postings). 

When I first discovered AR and began posting, I admit it was MOSTLY for the POINTS. That was the competitive streak in me. Generally, I am not really very competitive. But still, in the beginning, this POSTING FOR POINTS  went on for some time. Too long, in fact.  Then it began making me feel like a cheater of sorts. Made me feel kind of dirty. You know, like when you were in school and hadn't studied for a test and craned your neck to take a peek at your fellow student's paper. Though I wasn't copying anyone's posts in AR, I still felt creepy about just writing "anything" to gain some points. The "great bloggers" on AR spend a lot of time and put a lot of thought into their posts. Me, I was just throwing anything out there to see if it would stick.

...Now, though my posts are never earth-shattering or inspirational or long and poetic, I do TRY to write about something that may be helpful to a fellow Realtor or a client. I also keep them short because that's the only way I know how to write---to the point.

So...back to the question:

Do you POST for POINTS    3D question mark     if so.....it's OKAY.  Just keep blogging. We are ALL welcome here!!!!

Before my family moved to Lake Arrowhead--in 1991--I did as much research as possible about the area. We knew the schools were awesome, which was actually the reason we were moving here. Most of our education, however, came from our wonderful Realtor, via "word of mouth." She was always on top of it. Those days, we made calls and did a lot of mailing back and forth to gain knowledge: Things to do, places to see, where to eat, etc.

SPRING FORWARD--and NOT just your clocks!

Ahhhhhhhhhhhh...spring is "almost" here. In fact, this weekend we (in CA) change our clocks to "Spring Forward."  I LOVE spring! The weather is changing and we should be changing our business practices. It's a perfect time to send out mailings to clients, to  your farm area and spere of influence! Just a simple message like,  "It's time to start planting those flowers."  They all know, and have heard, that the market "isn't up to par."   YET.    BUT,  they need to be reminded that this is actually a perfect market   in many ways. !!

  • Buyers: Prices are down, rates are down and inventory is plentiful. 
  • Sellers: It's a wonderful opportunity to list. Give the house a spring cleaning, air out the winter blues, plant some flowers and  get it listed.  
  • AGENTS: Wipe off your OPEN HOUSE signs, bring your laptop or a good book and...

Enjoy the weather. And, YOUR business!

A DOPEY COMPUTER QUESTION

Okay, I know this has nothing to do with Real Estate, but I am feeling desperate at this point...so I am going out on a limb and asking anyway:

Since I bought my new laptop, which has VISTA, I am unable to download certain programs. One, just a simple little site I LOVE, cannot be downloaded; www.smileycentral.com   I am thinking that something, somewhere is blocking it.

All you 'puter guru's out there, PLEASE tell me your thoughts.

CHANGE CAN BE GOOD--New Area, New Office

Wow--it's been a long time since I've posted. So, today, I figured it was about time to let you know what I've been up to. M-O-V-I-N-G!   The older I get, the harder I am finding it is to get moving...period.

But, anyway, I am back HOME in Southern, California, living in the beautiful San Bernardino Mountains. If you're not certain where that is--well, it was all over the news last year due to widespread fires. Mother Nature at her worst.    However, this community is still beautiful and still has so much to offer. It is a great place to live, either full-time or part-time and to raise a family. We're only an hour away from the beaches or the deserts. As I get back into posting, I'll be sharing more about Lake Arrowhead, Blue Jay and all the sweet towns here;  at a MILE HIGH elevation.  Up here, our slogan is "Come up for AIR." 

I have joined the wonderful company, WINDERMERE FINE PROPRIETIES/Lake Arrowhead. Great company to be affiliated with!  

 

But let me add; it was very difficult and SAD leaving my friends behind in Tuolumne County.
