Though it's foggy and damp outside this morning, I am feeling even more blessed than usual. I am opening the doors of my little cabin in the San Bernardino Mountains to many friends and family, some I haven't seen in years.  And that makes it even more special. We'll be crowded, to say the least, but even that makes me smile, as closeness is what the holidays are all about, right?

It's not important that we're dining in a small home. It's not important that the weather is a tad soggy. It's not important if the sweet potato cassorole gets a tiny bit overdone. WHO CARES? We're all here for hugs, laughs, talk and great food.

This year, THE BLUE JAY CHRISTMAS PARADE is on December 6th, 2008....and it's one of the most exciting events this time of the year in our local mountains. I've always gone (when I could), but I've never been IN IT. Until this year. Whoopie!  WINDERMERE Fine Properties/Lake Arrowhead will be participating, so watch for me and give me your best wave as I stroll by.  

In 1934, BLUE JAY VILLAGE was named for our beautiful Blue Jays that you'll see (and hear) flying around all year long. Today, Blue Jay Village is known for all its shops, restaurants and other fun, family activites. This year, stores will be open later for the holiday season. You really should take your time and really get to know this little town... You won't be sorry.

In fact, we have both! We have MOUNTAINS COMMUNITY HOSPITAL  (MCH) and LAKE ARROWHEAD MEDICAL CENTER, with many qualified doctors and specialists. Right here in the mountains!  And, IF you have a major medical problem that cannot be handled by the hospital, they have helicopter pad and a patient will be MEDEVAC'D down the mountain within moments.

Mountains Community Hospital was built in 1951 (good year--I was born then!). Its a full-service hospital and birthing center.  There is a physician on duty  24/7, 365 days a year at their Emergency Room. They also offer the only obstetric services from Big Bear to Crestline.

Range of Services provided by Mountains Community Hospital:

• Obstetrics
• Medical/Surgical
• Skilled Nursing
• Post-acute Care Rehabilitation and Respite Care             
• Emergency Services

Out patient services:

• Laboratory
• Cardiac stress testing
• Radiology (CT, ultrasound, bone densitometry, and mammography).

• Speech therapy.

   Licensed by the State of California, MCH is Medicare and Medi-Cal certified. They are one of the few small rural hospitals accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health care Organizations.
